Although genuine fear and confusion about the 'killer plague virus' is a part of whats led us to where we are right now theres another part that needs looking at too.
While a minority of us are horrified at our lives becoming an episode of black mirror/ the plot of every dystopian nightmare novel ever, theres a critical mass of people out there who are LOVING it. For years now the masses in this country, and others, have been taking every opportunity to voice their discontent a the way things were and to signal the desire for big scale change, and now we've got it. People in this 'comfortable, safe' country, bored to tears by politics and news over the past few years, and consumers of vast amounts of thrilling dystopian fiction on screen, have embraced the drama of this non-threat, the huge and exciting changes its brought to their lives and the feeling of being 'part of' something big.
Many don't want this to end or to go back to how things were before. This 'new normal' isnt as simple as something being pushed on an unwilling, confused public by an evil government. Its also something thats being pulled and led by a public who don't want boring facts about how the virus isnt a threat/doesnt exist or about how mandated masks are pointless/harmful/seriously dangerous to our civil rights etc.
Some of us look at the cliff we're collectively going over and think oh god no, but a large number of people out there look at the same cliff and whoop with joy as they race towards it. We cant ignore that in our fight for 'freedom', so what can we do to make a resistance movement exciting, dramatic and fulfilling enough for a critical mass to switch sides?
