I suggest you force Waitrose to admit that they are enforcing internal Waitrose policy on its customers. Make them admit it's not about complying with the legislation - there is none - and all about Waitose policy

At the moment, these big companies are trying to make out that they are the innocent party and that the government is the big bad boy to blame. Don't let them get away with this. Write to them and force them to admit it's Waitrose who is requiring this. Then shame them. I bet very few of their workers even know this. We need to give this a lot of publicity. Let people know the truth.

Hili - I think those guidelines are posted by most of the major stores and supermarkets. It's just that some of them have decided not to enforce those rules. My local supermarket has said it's not up to them to enforce the rules, but for the the police to do so. The local police have said they aren't interested unless they get a call from the shop asking them to intervene. For example, if there is abuse from a customer or a fight breaks out. So basically it's up to each individual shop to do as they see fit. Good luck in finding a sympathetic shop!
