I am a teacher in a state secondary school and feel that the direction of travel is towards face masks and / or visors for staff and / or students, either mandated by government or encouraged by the school itself. I am deeply opposed to this, and wonder where I would stand contractually / legally if I refused to attend work for reasons related to face masks / visors.

Hi! I am in the same boat just in different corners. I am a key worker and have to wear mask despite the fact that I have lung condition. I had disciplinary -written warning for taking mask off. I am appealing decision as here is clear Health and Safety at work issue. You could try that-as your health and well being is being compromised. ACAS could assist you in this or Your Union.
Fraser, Im afraid I don't know the answer and I think maybe getting legal advice from an employment law specialist solicitor might be your best bet?
I’m not a legal expert nor do I have any knowledge of what’s in your contract. However I would be surprised if there was a section of it mentioning compulsory attire for students and teachers during a virus outbreak, let alone as a precautionary measure to prevent this very unlikely eventuality! If you tried to teach your classroom via Zoom calls or attended the classroom but refused to wear masks/visors then how could you possibly be in breach of a contract that makes no mention of these things?
Secondly, these are ill thought out mandates, they are not bills to be debated in Parliament for the purpose of being enshrined in law on the statute book. How is it possible to break a law that doesn’t exist?!
I’m sure there are many legal loopholes and avenues to explore. My advice would be to find a good lawyer from a reputable firm who can give you a consultation and explain your options. Best of luck.
Check law or fiction (I think that is correct) they may have some guidance on this. no idea if we have any legal people on here sorry
